Build Change studied the 2001 Gujarat earthquake, the 1999 Uttaranchal earthquake, and the 1993 Maharashtra earthquake. From this research, we published the following resources:
- Long Term Change in Construction Practice Through Post-Earthquake Reconstructions
- Lessons learned from post-earthquake housing reconstruction in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Uttaranchal
- Housing Reconstruction and Retrofitting After the 2001 Kachchh, Gujarat Earthquake
- A construction manual for earth-based earthquake-resistant houses

Region and Risks
On January 26, 2001, in the Kachchh district of Gujarat, India, the 7.7-magnitude Bhuj earthquake caused over 20,000 deaths and destroyed over 215,000 houses.
Unreinforced masonry buildings with heavy roofs and poorly designed reinforced concrete frame buildings caused the most damage. Moreover, before the earthquake, the government had used pre-cast concrete panel systems to build 6,000 primary schools; many of them collapsed.
