Eva, who lives in Padang Alai, West Sumatra, can now breathe easier after moving into her new house. The experience of two major earthquakes in 2007 and 2009 left her concerned for how to keep her family safe – especially her 2-year-old daughter. Although she had experienced several major earthquakes in the past, the 2009 earthquake completely changed her perspective. “I was terribly scared because my baby was alone in the bedroom and reaching her was difficult as I could not even stand. I had to crawl to reach her. Fortunately I was able to get her out because the house was heavily damaged,” In both the 2007 and 2009 earthquakes, their home was damaged and their only option was to just keep making repairs the best they could. “After seeing my severely damaged house, my husband and I started to wonder what we could do,” she said.
