During a 2.5 year program in tsunami-devastated Aceh, Indonesia, Build Change built 33
houses in partnership with local builders, improved the design and
construction of over 4,200 houses built by partner organizations, trained over 130 builders and 245 technical high school students. Download a Flyer on Build Change’s Aceh Program and visit the Technical Resources page for more details.

Build Change - Mercy Corps Pilot Project
A pilot reconstruction project, funded and completed in partnership with
Mercy Corps, is finished in Lampisang and Keunue ue villages of Peukan Bada
subdistrict of Aceh Besar.
Build Change - Mercy Corps Partnership
Mercy Corps continues to fund Build Change's growing impacts on the
reconstruction of Aceh. Mercy Corps is supporting Build Change to provide
design and construction assistance to other organizations building houses in
Aceh, and to build the capacity of local masons and carpenters. So far,
Build Change has supported Catholic Relief Services (CRS), Oxfam
International, CARE International Indonesia, IOM, Rekompak, Architecture
Clinic (ArCli), UPLINK, and the French Red Cross with design and
construction assistance.
Build Change - Catholic Relief Services Partnership
Build Change has worked in partnership to design earthquake-resistant houses
and retrofit solutions for over 675 houses in Aceh. Build Change has
supported CRS's development of construction quality checklists and building
specifications, built 7 houses by hiring and supervising local builders.
Build Change - Australia - Indonesia Partnership
for Reconstruction and
Development (AIPRD) Partnership
Build Change built another 15 houses in a hands-on builders training program
in partnership with AIPRD.
Build Change - Oxfam International Partnership
Build Change worked in partnership with Oxfam International to design over
211 earthquake-resistant houses in Aceh.
Build Change - CARE International Indonesia Partnership
Build Change worked in partnership with CARE International Indonesia to
develop house inspection methodologies and provide hands-on training for

June 30, 2008: Reconnaissance to Sichuan
Build Change's Founder, Dr. Elizabeth Hausler, visited the earthquake-affected area to understand why buildings failed and make plans to support earthquake-resistant housing reconstruction. Using unconfined precast concrete plank floors on top of unreinforced masonry walls caused most of the devastation (foreground in photo below), but some confined masonry buildings performed flawlessly (background).

Visit the Technical Resources page under post-earthquake recon reports for more information, and support the homeowners to rebuild earthquake-resistant houses so they never have to face such tragedy again. DONATE NOW
May 12, 2008: Devastation in China
69,185 killed. 374,171 injured. 18,467 missing. More than 7.79 million houses destroyed and 24.5 million damaged. 5 million homeless, and 10 million now living below the poverty line after a M7.9 earthquake.
January 28, 2008 : On Video!
Elizabeth Hausler explains to Global X that she was finishing her Ph.D. in engineering at Berkeley when an earthquake hit India and killed 20,000 people. That's when she realized that "it's not the earthquake that kills people, it's the building collapsing."
