IMPACT SUMMARY: At end of program, December 31, 2007. See Notes Below.

PROGRAM SUMMARY

Build Change's team of local technical experts (engineers, architects, and construction supervisors) worked for 2 1/2 years with the tsunami survivors in Aceh, Indonesia to rebuild safe, satisfactory, and sustainable houses.

(1) LEARN FIRST: Housing Subsector Study

Build Change used detailed housing subsector studies to determine which structural and architectural housing types were appropriate for climate and culture. To understand why houses collapse (and why they don't) we did technical reconnaissance studies in three post-earthquake environments in Indonesia. Visit the Technical Resources page.

(2) DESIGN EARTHQUAKE-RESISTANT HOUSES

CONFINED MASONRY is the most commonly preferred structural system by homeowners in Aceh. In partnership with a team of pro bono structural engineers from San Francisco Bay Area companies, Build Change performed structural engineering analysis and developed detailed design drawings for typical single family confined masonry houses. Check our Technical Resources page for the following documents:

  • Engineering Drawings
  • Bills of Quantity and Cost Estimates
  • Design and Construction Guideline for Earthquake-Resistant Single Story Confined Masonry Houses
  • Confined Masonry Case History (DRAFT)
  •

Build Change improved the design and/or construction of over 4,200 houses in partnership with international organizations such as Mercy Corps, Catholic Relief Services, Oxfam International, CARE International Indonesia, and International Organization for Migration.

COST PER IMPACT: US$25 per house impacted through consulting type services such as design reviews, drawing revisions, construction checklist preparation, and construction inspection.

    (3) BUILD LOCAL CAPACITY

Build Change built 33 earthquake-resistant, comfortable, sustainable houses in partnership with local builders.

COST PER IMPACT: US$6,000 - $10,000 including all materials, labor, electrical wiring, septic system, design, construction supervision and builder training

Build Change trained 138 builders in intensive, on-the-job training programs, permanently improving skills and increasing wages for rural construction workers.

COST PER IMPACT: US$700 per house or US$120 per builder for 4 month training program.

Build Change trained 245 technical high school students in earthquake-resistant design and construction, increasing their test scores by up to 50%.

COST PER IMPACT: US$20-30 per student.

    (4) STIMULATE LOCAL DEMAND

Build Change empowered homeowners to choose their own structural system, layout, roof type and paint color, and worked hand-in-hand with homeowners to supervise thier construction.

    (5) FACILITATE ACCESS TO CAPITAL

Funding for house construction materials and labor was provided by partner agencies.

    (6) MEASURE THE CHANGE

See above for final impact numbers. Notes:

  • Safer Houses is the number of houses which were better because of Build Change's inputs.
  • Better Builders is the number of builders trained by Build Change through on-the-job, intensive apprenticeship type training programs.
  • Trained Engineers includes local engineers, architects, technical high school students or other construction professionals employed and mentored by Build Change or attending Build Change's training courses.
  • Empowered Homeowners includes homeowners who were empowered to design and/or supervise their own construction through Build Change's mentorship and guidance.
